PSARC : IDEAL
Arguably, we strive to be applauded for our talents and our triumphs, but what about our tribulations? Why not be praised for what society and culture deem as our unglamorous efforts to overcome obligatory tasks heaped upon us by circumstances beyond our control?
When ambushed by seemingly fated misfortunes, we find ourselves unwittingly responsible for our responses to unsolicited setbacks. One frustrating reality of abuse is the expenditure of precious time and energy in attempt to right the wrongs inflicted upon us.
Not only must we grieve the parts of our lives spent surviving abuse, but we must dually process the secondary waves of grief that come in the form of time, money, and energy spent attempting to reestablish a semblance of our former selves prior to the trauma we endured.
Trauma survivors are all too familiar with the fight to reinstate our humanity. We understand that healing is possible, but one devastating aspect of recovery is considering what is reasonable for us to achieve with our remaining years.
Many of us must face the fact that, with what time we have left, we may not have the luxury of enjoying the full spectrum of human experience with the dignity we managed to salvage. It is also glaringly obvious that healing is a privilege and a large population of people lack the resources needed to attain freedom, justice, or compensation from their abusers. However, even survivors with unlimited resources may remain trapped in a muted reality robbed of their initiative and executive function.
PSARC : IDEAL is a reaction to the many waves of grief survivors are forced to endure by applauding the successful and not so successful behaviors we implement in response to trauma. Most humans do the best they can with what tools they have to manage pain. Some tools are better than others, but PSARC : IDEAL smiles, winks, and nods to those of us who are just trying to fucking make it to the next day.
